Based on the French tente d’abri, the Federal issue shelter-tent half was a welcome new addition to the soldier’s equipment in 1861. Lighter in weight and more compact than previous types of tents, it required no vehicle carriage yet was rugged enough to support a campaigning army on foot. Though simple in design, no two contractors produced a shelter tent half the same until an effort was made in 1864 to standardize patterns, materials, and construction. This particular contract tent half is copied from original examples in public and private collections. It consists of two horizontally seamed panels of cotton duck, machine sewn and hemmed, with linen corner reinforcements. Twenty-three tinned buttons with matching hand-sewn buttonholes and a manila rope guy line and peg loop finish the piece. It is stamped with the contractor’s mark of George Moulton, Cincinnati Depot.
